Korean.net values the protection of your private information and observes the private information protection provisions of the Information Communication Network Use Promotion Law, and of the Privacy Information Protection Guidelines enacted by the Ministry of Information and Communication. Korean.net, through its private information protection policy, informs you of the purpose for which your private information will be used, how it is used, and what measures are taken to protect them. Korean.net discloses its private information protection policy on the first page of its homepage to make it easy for you to refer to it . To continuously improve its private information protection measures, the Korean.net defines procedures that are necessary for amending its private information protection policy. Furthermore, in case the need to amend its private information protection policy arises, Korean.net will announce the details of such amendment so you could conveniently keep yourself abreast with important developments regarding the service. Korean.net’s private information protection policy includes the following: 1. consent to the collection of private information; 2. the purpose of the collection of private information and the scope of their use; 3. the use of private information for purposes other than those prescribed in the Agreement, and their provision to third parties; 4. access to and amendment of private information; 5. withdrawal of consent to the collection and use of private information, and to the provision of such private information to third parties; 6. the operation of cookies; 7. the preservation period and period of use of the private information; 8. the technical/systematic management of private information with the end in view of protecting them; 9. the commissioned treatment of private information; 10. gathering of opinions and handling of complaints; and 11. the manager in charge of managing private information, and his contact number. 1. Consent to the collection of private information Korean.net provides procedures whereby the users can click on the Agree or Cancel button to agree or disagree, respectively, with the user agreement. Clicking on the Agree button is regarded as giving one’s consent to the collection of private information. 2. The purpose of the collection of private information and the scope of their use Private information refers to any information on living individual persons that can distinguish them from other living persons, such as name, resident card number, etc. (including information that can combine with other information with ease and that can distinguish specific individuals from others when the provided information alone cannot do so). 2.1 Purpose of the collection of private information To improve and provide its customized services and other services, Korean.net collects private information from its users. 2.2 Method of collecting private information Private information is collected from an individual, enterprise, or organization that applies for membership in Korean.net. Korean.net also collects additional information required for using related services, such as the member’s contact details and address (needed to confirm the identity of the member and for the delivery of pertinent documents), from a member who is already using the service. 2.3 Scope of private information collected The information that is collected from an applicant for membership in Korean.net or from a member who already uses the service is categorized into essential items (name, nationality, date of birth, nation, city, gender, telephone number, e-mail address, etc.) and optional items (application for Web mail, etc.). An enterprise member is required to provide essential items (company name, kind of business, nation, major products and services, address, e-mail address, position, contact details, etc.) and optional items (number of employees, sales amount, proprietary technologies, etc.). An organization member is required to provide essential items (organization’s name, representative’s name, kind of organization, address of the organization, etc.) and optional items (number of members, establishment year, history, etc.). Essential items are required to be given not only for the provision of Korean.net’s customized services, but also for the prevention of the stealthy or illegal use of a member’s private information. The whole scope of information collected from an applicant can be confirmed by the membership application form. 3. Use of private information for purposes other than those prescribed in the Agreement, and providing such information to third parties Korean.net shall use the applicant’s or member’s private information within the purview of the announcement made in , and shall not use it beyond such scope or provide it to third parties such as other persons, enterprises, and agencies. In case Korean.net, however, sees a need to secure additional information from its members and to share the already secured information with other agencies or enterprises in order to provide better services to its members, it must first seek the members’ consent to such through the prescribed procedures. In case the members give their consent, or a user has violated the user agreement with Korean.net or has used the service of Korean.net to inflict damages on others or to hurt time-honored customs, thus providing Korean.net with sufficient reason for legal action, Korean.net may disclose the private information needed for it to take such legal action. Under the following circumstances, however, Korean.net shall not provide a third party with private information concerning a user: 3.1 in case special regulations under the Information Communication Network Use Promotion Law and other related laws prohibit the provision of private information to a third party; 3.2 in case the provision of customized services requires the confirmation of delivery routes for the service of Korean.net; 3.3 in case statistics compilation, academic studies, or market surveys require the provision of private information to a third party, with the information provided in such a way that specific individuals cannot be recognized or identified (for example, the information that 45% of overseas Koreans are female). Korean.net shall neither trade nor lease its members’ private information. If Korean.net needs to share its members’ private information with third parties such as in any of the circumstances earlier mentioned, it shall inform its members of its intent to do so and shall secure its members’ permission before proceeding. 4. Access to and amendment of private information Korean.net members may access their respective private information and may amend essential personal information that they provided to Korean.net at any time. The members may also access, amend, or delete additional information that they provided Korean.net, except essential information required for joining the membership, at any time. To change their member type and resident number, however, the members must make a request via the homepage, e-mail, telephone, fax, or other means, for Korean.net to amend the concerned information, and Korean.net shall do so accordingly upon its acceptance of such request. Members may amend their respective private information or withdraw their membership via the User Information Change Menu of Korean.net after logging in. 5. Withdrawal of consent to the collection and use of private information, and to the provision of private information to third parties The members can withdraw the information they provided Korean.net when they applied for membership in it. They may also withdraw their consent to the provision of their private information to third parties. To withdraw such consent, the members need to click on the main page, the menu, , or contact webmaster@korean.net via e-mail. Korean.net will accordingly withdraw (membership withdrawal) the member’s consent to the collection of private information. 6. Operation of cookies Korean.net uses the cookie method for member authorization. When the cookie is not automatically stored but deleted in the PC when logging out, and when a user uses the service in public places or in a PC commonly used by others, he or she must log out after using the service. The members have options for cookies. The members may accept all cookies by adjusting the Web browser options, may be informed when cookies are installed, and may reject all cookies. If a member chooses to reject all cookies, he or she cannot use the kind of Korean.net services that requires registration. ※ A cookie is a small of amount information that a Web site sends to a user’s computer browser, such as Netscape and Internet Explorer, to store basic information on the user’s site. When a user accesses the Web site, the service provider’s computer reads the cookie information in the user’s browser, searches the additional user information in its computer, and provides the service without entering additional information such as name after the user has obtained access tothe Web site. Cookies can distinguish a user’s computer from those of others but cannot distinguish a user from other users. 7. Preservation period and period of use of private information A user’s private information shall be destroyed when the purposes for its collection or provision to third parties have been fulfilled, as follows: 7.1 in the case of the information required for membership application, when a user withdraws his or her membership or when his or her membership is revoked (The ID and information on activity details, however, will be kept for six (6) months for use in Korean.net statistics); 7.2 when temporary purposes (events or surveys) for the collection and provision of private information to third parties have been accomplished; and 7.3 when the time required for keeping the data needed to handle user complaints or disputes has expired. In case Korean.net sees a need to keep its members private information notwithstanding the aforementioned circumstances, it will seek the consent of its members before it does so. 8. Technical/systematic management of private information for its protection Ø Technical management measures To prevent the loss, theft, leakage, falsification, or damage of its members’ private information, Korean.net takes the following technical management measures: 1. Private information is protected by the member’s password, and important data are protected by separate security functions. 2. Korean.net uses vaccine programs and takes action to prevent damage due to computer virus attacks. Vaccine programs are regularly updated, thus preventing damage from sudden virus attacks. 3. To protect its members’ private information against hacking attacks, a system is operated 24 hours to stop external attacks. Ø Systematic management measures In addition to the aforementioned efforts, the members are required to take caution against the illegal use of their passwords, etc. and against exposing them to third parties. In particular, the members are advised to take extraordinary caution against the leakage of their passwords when using PCs installed in public places. The members are therefore advised not to disclose their ID and password to a third party, and to change their password frequently. Korean.net does its best to protect its members’ private information, but shall not be held liable for accidents arising from its members’ personal negligence or from fundamental Internet risks. In addition to the technical management measures that Korean.net is taking to protect its members’ private information, Korean.net has established the following measures: 1. It has banned the combined keeping of private information and ordinary data. 2. It grants rights to access private information and establishes procedures to confirm this. 3. It designates staffers to take charge of the system designed for handling its members’ private information, grants them a password to protect the system’s security, and offers them regular education so they would be abreast with new security technologies and so they would be constantly reminded of their duty to protect private information. 4. It designates computer rooms, data archives, etc. as protective areas, and implements access control procedures. 5. It implements contingency procedures against the occurrence of glitches. 6. To manage communications, it implements procedures for conducting a regular inspection of the status of online lines, equipment, and systems, and for recording/keeping the inspection results in management books. 7. Commissioned treatment of private information To improve its service, Korean.net may commission an external establishment to handle its members’ private information, subject to the following conditions: 7.1 In case the handling of private information is commissioned to an external establishment, the members will be informed of such in advance. 7.2 In case the handling of private information is commissioned to an external establishment, Korean.net shall conclude an agreement under which the other party shall strictly comply with its private information-related instructions, keep the members’ private information confidential, ban the provision of private information to third parties, and hold the third party liable for any damage that may arise from accidents. Korean.net shall make the agreement in writing or electronically. 8. Gathering of opinions and handling of complaints Korean.net has opened a facility whereby it could accept your opinions and complaints regarding private information protection. If you send your complaints and opinions regarding private information to a staffer-in-charge at Korean.net, we will immediately address them upon our receipt thereof, and we will immediately inform you of the results of our action. 9. Manager in charge of managing private information, and his contact details Korean.net has designated a staffer to be in charge of gathering opinions and handling complaints regarding private information.
