The World Bank has appointed its first Korean vice president.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance and Ministry of Science and Technology said the Washington-based bank on July 30 named Kim Sangbu, former Google consumer policy director for the Asia-Pacific region, as its first vice president for digital transformation.

Kim is the first Korean national to assume a high-ranking post at the bank since Korea became a member in 1955.

The World Bank launched the position this year to promote the advancement of developing economies through digital technology. Kim will play a leading role in setting the foundation for digital economy such as building and enhancing digital and data infrastructure, cybersecurity and data privacy for institutions, businesses and the public, and advancing e-government services.

He previously worked at the Ministry of Information and Communications, Office of the President and Korean Communications Commission and held executive positions at Google and LG Uplus.

The World Bank has one president, four managing directors and 27 vice presidents. Kim starts his term on Sept. 3.
