Rising demand for Korean products in Mexico is especially keen for cosmetics.

Cosmetics exports to the country since 2020 has shown steady growth except in 2022, the South American regional headquarters of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) said on Sept. 10.

Such shipments this year between January and July jumped 51% year on year, more than double last year's rise of 25%.

With a population of 130 million, Mexico holds lucrative growth potential for the Korean beauty industry as about 96% of its people use cosmetics.

"Many people in Mexico have skin problems due to the strong sunlight," a source from the headquarters said. "Demand for products that block ultraviolet rays is rising."

"Recently, the preference is noticeable for easy all-in-one and portable items, as well as the expansion of new consumer groups such as men and babies."

KOTRA said it confirmed this trend at this year's K-Lifestyle in Mexico event from Sept. 6-8 in Mexico City. Thirty participating cosmetics companies attracted keen visitor interest by diagnosing skin types with Korean beauty devices and holding promotional events.

Other items related to Korean pop and food are also gaining popularity in Mexico. For example, ramyeon (instant noodle) exports there over the past four years have grown over 46% on average per year.
