A solar coronagraph jointly developed with the U.S. on Nov. 5 will be launched into space.

The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) and Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) on Nov. 1 announced the forthcoming launch of the Coronal Diagnostic Experiment (CODEX) jointly developed with NASA of the U.S. The launch is scheduled for 11:29 a.m. on Nov. 5 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

CODEX has been loaded on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket awaiting blastoff. The final pre-launch check on the device was conducted from July 29 to Aug. 2 at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and Kennedy Space Center before takeoff.

The time required from the launch of CODEX until its installation at the International Space Station (ISS) is about a week.

CODEX will separate from the launch vehicle about 10 minutes after blastoff, dock with the ISS some 13 hours later and be installed on the station's External Logistics Carrier (ELC3-3) via robotic arm. It will then observe for up to 55 minutes during the 90-minute orbital period.

CODEX will simultaneously observe the corona, the outermost atmosphere of the sun, as well as its temperature and speed, which were previously observable to a limited degree, and produce a two-dimensional video of them.

The device is expected to assist research on coronal heating and solar speed acceleration, and the results of its observations are expected to lead to more accurate forecasts of space weather.

The Goddard center will handle CODEX's mission operations and control, while KASI will remotely receive and monitor data.
