National team sweeps all 5 gold medals at Int'l Physics Olympiad

All five members of the national team who competed at this year's International Physics Olympiad, which ran from July 4-12 in Bucaramanga, Colombia, came home with gold medals, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity announced on July 14.
With of 381 students from 91 countries competing at the event, Kim Mu-yeon, Oh Ju-ha, Lee Gwon-heon, Lee Seung-jun and Jeong Min-gwon, all of whom are in their final year at Seoul Science High School, won their respective contests. Oh also posted the highest individual score at the competition.
Established in 1967 in Warsaw, Poland, with five Eastern bloc countries competing, the annual contest looks for and encourages students interested in physics and stimulates their spirit of challenge to promote development in the field. The venue is rotated around the globe.
The theoretical and experimental tests were each held for five hours at this year's edition. Participants received three theoretical and one experimental question.
Delegation head Shin Yong-il, a professor of physics and astronomy at Seoul National University and chair of the Korea Physics Olympiad Committee under the Korean Physical Society, said, "I'm very happy that the entire team achieved the outstanding result of winning gold medals."
"I sincerely hope that they can continue cultivating their dreams and capabilities in science and develop into leaders who shape the future."
Next for the delegation are global Olympiads in fields such as chemistry (July 10–19), biology (July 12–19) and mathematics (July 10–21).
