Soprano Sumi Jo on Aug. 2 received the Maria Callas Special Award in Verona, Italy, her public relations agency PRM said.

Jo is the first Asian to receive the honor.

Named after Italian soprano Maria Callas, the prize recognizes artists who have made outstanding contributions to the global development of opera and classical music.

On her Facebook page, Jo wrote, "On August 2, 1947, the legendary diva Maria Callas made her historic Italian debut at the Arena di Verona. 79 years later, on the very same day and in the same city, I received an award bearing her name."

"To be honored with a prize dedicated to one of the greatest artists of all time is a deeply moving and unforgettable moment that I will treasure forever."

The Verona city government also praised her, saying the presentation of the honor to the world renowned opera singer added greater significance to this year's awards ceremony and reaffirmed the prize's original purpose of recognizing the greatest artists in vocal music.

President Lee Jae Myung on the same day through his X account also congratulated Jo, saying, "For the past 40 years, your beautiful voice has transcended borders, inspiring audiences around the world and bringing honor to the name of the Republic of Korea. I extend my deepest respect and gratitude."

Marking the 40th anniversary of her global debut this year, Jo has an active schedule that includes the release of her commemorative album "Continuum," the hosting of the second Sumi Jo International Singing Competition and a major world tour in the second half of the year. On Sept. 4, she will also hold a 40th anniversary concert at the Seoul Arts Center in Seoul's Seocho-gu District.
