June saw a surplus in the tourism balance for the fourth consecutive month, its largest figure since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Korea Tourism Organization's Korea Tourism Data Lab on Aug. 9 said the black figure reached USD 596.6 million (KRW 841.8 billion) in June, a massive turnaround of USD 1.44 billion (KRW 2.03 trillion) from a deficit of USD 846.8 million posted in the same month last year.

Returning to positive territory in March with USD 263.8 million, the surplus reached USD 159.9 million in April and USD 220.5 million in May before nearing USD 600 million a month later.

Brisk consumption by foreign tourists was cited for the surge. Tourism revenue in June reached USD 2.78 billion, greatly surpassing tourism spending of USD 2.18 billion.

International visitors spent a per capita average of USD 1,397 (KRW 1.97 million) in Korea, more than USD 1,091 (KRW 1.54 million) by Korean tourists abroad.
