The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on Aug. 3 launched an inter-ministerial preparatory task force to ensure a successful hosting of the fourth United Nations Ocean Conference in Busan. (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries)

Busan in June 2028 will host the United Nations (U.N.) Ocean Conference, the largest global congress in the maritime sector, around the convention center BEXCO in the city's Haeundae-gu District.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on Aug. 10 announced that its selection committee in a meeting chose Busan as the venue for the event.

"Busan was praised as the nation's leading maritime city given its concentration of sea-related infrastructure spanning industry, research and education that closely aligns with the purpose of the U.N. Ocean Conference."

Held every three years, the event is the world's largest highest-level global conference on the sea. An estimated 20,000 participants from all 193 U.N. member states, international groups and non-governmental organizations are expected to attend to discuss maritime-related agenda.

Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo said, "We will work closely with the Busan Metropolitan Government and relevant organizations to thoroughly prepare for a successful conference that showcases our maritime capacity to the world and leads international cooperation for sustainable oceans."
